Introduction: Why Does Form Look This Way?
Every age produces not only its way of thinking, but also its way of seeing and forming. The heaviness of figures in one period, the covering of the surface with ornament, the construction of depth through geometric order, or the idealization of the body within specific proportions is not accidental. Form does not emerge merely as the result of an artist’s personal taste or technical skill. It carries the trace of how an age understands the world, what it considers valuable, and within which measures it organizes the visible.
Alois Riegl thought this historical orientation through the concept of Kunstwollen, or Art-Will. Art-Will does not reduce the formal preferences of an age to superficial taste; it points to a deeper will to see and to form operating behind them. An age does not only produce certain images; it also establishes a law of form concerning how the world should appear.
In the age of artificial intelligence, a new layer has been added to this historical law of form. Form is no longer established only through the artist’s intuition, cultural memory, historical style, or social sensibility. Data distributions, model parameters, optimization targets, recommendation systems, interaction statistics, and platform economies now directly participate in the formation of form. That an image appears “natural,” a text “fluent,” a surface “clean,” a composition “successful,” or a design “professional” is no longer related only to aesthetic judgment, but also to the norms of technical systems.
Filomythos names this new condition with the concept of Code-Will / Code-Wollen. Code-Will is the contemporary formal necessity in which aesthetic and formal preferences are directed not only by human intuition, but also by data distributions, algorithmic parameters, performance targets, and platform logics.
I. From Kunstwollen to Code-Wollen
Riegl’s concept of Kunstwollen was a powerful intervention against approaches that explained art history only through progress, technical mastery, or individual genius. For him, form is not a neutral surface in itself. Every period establishes the world within a specific way of seeing. The rise of surface, the growing importance of volume, the hardening of line, the refinement of the figure, or the deepening of space is related to the visual will of the age.
This thought remains important; yet in the age of artificial intelligence, it is no longer sufficient on its own. Formal norms are no longer established only by historical consciousness, religious worldview, political aesthetics, cultural taste, or artistic tradition. Databases, training sets, model designs, content platforms, visibility algorithms, and interaction economies also become decisive over form.
Code-Will enters precisely at this point. This concept expresses the new stage in which form is directed by the invisible preferences of technical systems. Which face will appear more familiar? Which color palette will be counted as more effective? Which composition will be found more balanced? Which narrative rhythm will be accepted as more fluent? Which text will appear more “helpful,” which image more “professional”? The answers to these questions are now written not only in aesthetic intuition, but also in data densities, performance targets, and circulation logics.
Code-Will does not cancel Art-Will. It adds a new and powerful field of determination beside it. While Art-Will names the historical and cultural will to form, Code-Will explains how this will is reconstructed within technical systems.
II. Its Place in Synthetic Epistemology
Code-Will is one of the formal concepts of Synthetic Epistemology. Synthetic Epistemology names the regime in which knowledge and representation increasingly shift from a relation of trace and reference to the external world toward records, datasets, model architectures, and correlations. Code-Will makes visible the effect of this regime on form.
In other words, while Synthetic Epistemology discusses the new conditions of knowledge and representation production, Code-Will explains how these conditions appear on the aesthetic surface, in textual flow, in visual organization, and in formal norms. Just as knowledge is reconstructed within data and model architectures, form also carries the norms of the same regime.
For this reason, Code-Will is not a concept that belongs only to artificial intelligence images. It also operates in text production, interface design, advertising aesthetics, social media visuals, product presentations, architectural visualizations, music recommendations, and the rhythms of digital content. The field of Code-Will is wherever form is technically optimized.
The central question of this concept is this: why does form look this way? And more importantly: within which data, model, platform, and performance regime does this appearance become natural?
III. The Three Sources of Code-Will
Code-Will does not arise from a single source. It operates on three main axes: data distribution, performance targets, and platform economy.
The first source is data distribution. Whichever faces, bodies, spaces, color palettes, lighting arrangements, frames, and compositions a model has seen more intensely, it more easily turns into norms. The form dominant within data returns like an invisible standard. It is not accidental that certain facial types, spatial orders, beauty codes, or atmospheres repeat in synthetic images. The model does not learn the world; it learns the forms of representation of the world concentrated within data.
The second source is performance targets. Models are optimized not only to produce, but to produce fast, stable, predictable outputs with low error rates and high user satisfaction. This optimization often treats uncertainty, extreme examples, and non-normative forms as problems. Forms that are sparsely represented, difficult to classify, or technically risky may be filed down. Form is thus attached to measures of technical success.
The third source is platform economy. Which visuals are clicked more, which videos are watched longer, which titles receive more interaction, which texts are shared more, and which surfaces enter circulation more quickly are constantly measured. This measurement also shapes production practices. Over time, the distance between “what looks good” and “what works well” narrows. Form is readjusted according to the economic logic of circulation.
When these three sources work together, Code-Will turns into the invisible law of contemporary form. The user usually encounters only the final surface; they do not see the data densities, optimization choices, and platform reward systems that make that surface possible.
IV. Its Bond with the Data Myth
Code-Will is often legitimized through the Data Myth. When data is accepted as neutral, complete, and self-evidently true, the formal norms derived from data also begin to appear natural and inevitable. Yet no dataset is neutral. Every dataset is a world selected, classified, labeled, cleaned, and made suitable for particular purposes.
Which faces are represented more densely within data, which bodies remain marginal, which geographies appear less, which languages are processed more strongly, and which color palettes and spatial orders are repeated more often are all related to historical and political inequalities. Code-Will does not create these inequalities by itself; but it can turn them into formal norms and return them to circulation.
That a synthetic image appears “realistic,” a text “fluent,” a surface “clean,” or a design “professional” does not mean that universal aesthetic truths are operating. Often, the dominant patterns of the data regime return under the appearance of technical success. The Data Myth renders this return implicit; Code-Will gives it form.
V. Form, Norm, and Repetition
One of the strongest effects of Code-Will is its invisible narrowing of formal diversity. The system more easily produces patterns that stand at the statistical center. Low-probability, sparse, rough, local, marginal, or difficult-to-calculate forms can become risky and problematic.
This is a frequently encountered result in synthetic production: faces become more beautiful but move closer to one another; spaces become cleaner but turn sterile; compositions become balanced but lose surprise; texts become more fluent but resemble one another within the same rhythm; designs become professional but lose personal traces. As technical perfection increases, formal uniformity may also intensify.
Here Code-Will becomes not merely an aesthetic preference, but a regime of norm production. Which bodies will remain at the center, and which will be pushed to the margins? Which surfaces will be counted as orderly, and which as excessive? Which rhythms will be considered professional, and which disorganized? Which visual memory will be familiar, and which foreign? Form is measured through these questions and can repeatedly strengthen the same norm.
For this reason, the central question of Code-Will is more than aesthetic: whose world does form normalize?
VI. Tension with Art-Will
Code-Will does not eliminate human creation; but it places it within a new field of tension. The artist, writer, designer, or content producer no longer works only with their own intuition. The model’s suggestions, the platform’s rhythm, interaction expectations, technical conveniences, and automatic correction mechanisms enter the creative process from the beginning.
This does not mean that human will has disappeared. But the conditions of formal decision have changed. When one option appears more fluent, cleaner, more professional, or higher-performing, behind this impression there is often the statistical norm of the model. The producing subject may accept, reject, distort, or struggle with this norm; but they cannot ignore its existence.
The difference between Art-Will and Code-Will becomes clear here. The first carries form as a historical, personal, cultural, and critical field of choice. The second attaches form to optimized, calculable, repeatable norms suited to circulation. These two fields do not always have to conflict; but when the tension between them becomes invisible, the creative field is silently standardized.
For the Threshold Human, the task is to preserve the difference between using the technical system and surrendering to its formal measure. Working with the model is possible; but to mistake the norm imposed by the model for a natural aesthetic truth weakens creative judgment.
VII. Glitch, Residue, and Epistemic Void
The limits of Code-Will become most visible in moments of stumbling. Glitch is therefore not merely technical error; it is a symptom that reveals the formal field the system cannot carry. Extra fingers, distorted faces, impossible spaces, illogical surface transitions, or contextless fractures in language show which patterns the model cannot fully process.
Residue is equally important. In the name of performance and smoothness, the system cleans certain excesses: the line of old age, the dirt of poverty, the trace of disorder, the non-normative body, the rare gesture, the difficult composition, the local language, slow thought, the hard surface. Yet historical and vital density often lies precisely in these details. Residue is the sediment that smoothness pushes outside.
Epistemic Void shows the deeper limit of Code-Will. What can the system not learn at all? Which forms become aesthetically invisible because they remain weak within data? Which lives, bodies, geographies, languages, and spaces are erased under the pressure of standardization? That Code-Will is not neutral becomes clear in these voids.
For this reason, criticizing Code-Will does not merely mean saying “the algorithm chose this.” The real issue is to ask which forms become systematically possible, which become difficult, and which become almost impossible.
Conclusion: Who Determines Form?
Code-Will names the hidden law of form in the age of artificial intelligence. When data distribution, performance targets, and platform logics work together, form no longer arises only from the inner world of the artist, writer, or designer; it is also affected by the invisible norms of technical systems.
The importance of this concept is that it makes it impossible to see form as merely an aesthetic preference. Form is now also the product of the data regime, algorithmic decision, optimization pressure, and circulation economy. To understand why an image is smooth, why a text is fluent, why a surface is clean, and why a composition appears familiar, one must take this technical ground into account.
Code-Will does not produce a romantic opposition to technology. Yet it does not allow technical norm to be treated as natural and inevitable either. The critical task is to see not only how to use form, but also under which regime form is established.
Because without knowing who determines form, we cannot understand under which power the contemporary visual and linguistic world operates. The concept of Code-Will names this invisible necessity. Once it is named, the silent law of form enters the field of critique.
